Boy, you are full of questions!
First one: Yes, common on reels that haven't been used much. It was promoting their line.
Second one: It is made from a resin based plastic that was developed during the time that Dr. Howard was expermenting with making the 'Wonderod". Howald was the Technical Director for the Plaskon Division of Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Company and was expermenting with plastics. The material was called "Glaskyd" and the Wonderod was official named the "Howald Glastik Wonderod" and patented as such.

And you are full of...answers...Thanks much "H" I appreciate it...I am gonna get the reel fixed up and use it for a conversation piece...I bet those reels break easy...Jerry
Jerry, never seen one broke. They do get scrached up fairly easy but they are built like a tank. The only bad think about them is that they are advertized as good for salt water and you see alot of them with the knobs gone just for that reason. They made maybe four sizes with each being a different spool length. The larger one looks to be a foot wide! LOL.
