Is there a way to determine the date of an older penn reel?

Those that have studied them a long time can pretty much tell at a glance. However, many Penn models were made for a lot of years. Catalogues will tell you when they were introduced, but it's an art form in itself to tell when the older catalogues were printed. If you have a pic and can post, do so...or at least tell what you know about the reel..i.e., model name...whether it has the star drag or not, etc. If you can't post a pic, but can email one to me, I'll put it one for you.
Posting details here & following through with Q&As is probably the easiest way to pin it down. Be forwarned that it can be nearly impossible to conclude an exact year in every case, if only b/c some parts may have been swapped over the years. However, the decade should be easy & the span, say mid 50's, late 50's, etc is a very good bet.
