Old Penn Seaford Reel For Sale.

Post by siranthony »

I have an old Penn Seaford 75. I am assuming the "75" since it says 300yds under the shoe. This reel is black with the waffle clicker button.
The handle is an egg shaped brown plastic and the nut is star shaped. Can anybody tell me anything about this reel? What year is it, what is it worth, etc. Also, there is no star drag on this reel. Does that mean that there is no drag at all? Lever forward and the spool spins either direction without the handle moving at all. Lever back and the spool will move either direction but the handle is engaged. Any info would be helpfull.

Try doing a search by clicking on the "search" button at the top of this page. There have been several recent discussions on this reel.

SEA FORD has no drag & no antireverse, close to what some folks have called 'knuckle buster' reels. Fish were controlled by thumbing the spool filled with line while the handle whirled around. The addition of free spool facilitated casting/dropping.

Not sure about the "egg shaped brown plastic" that handle may be a replacement or just a later edition. Look over the other threads on these reels here paying attention to what the logo looks like, early SFs have the Model F or K style logo. Also look at the discussion of 3 post vs. 4 post reels.

I'm also confused by the "star shaped" nut. IMO there were hex & the familiar Penn scalloped nuts. Never seen "75" associated w/them either.

I will post a picture in the next day or two. I'm sure that will be a great help. Thanks for the info.

Brian,
Everything is for sale for a price. Just kidding! I would sell it if you are interested. I am not a collector and I don't believe that I would want to use it for active fishing. I already have one broken finger. Make me an offer and we will see what we can do. Thanks.

Auction would revile what the reel was worth on a given day. I would guess that it would go for between 10-50 dollars depending on condition and buyers moods. If you had the box it would be worth more. Auctions are really hit or miss. I got a Penn long beach 65 from that same era (30s) and got two other reels (25 monofil + early 285 delmar) in the deal for 32 dollars and all work. I also got a 30s Penn Long beach 62 with seven other reels for about thirty dollars. I was able to get four of the reel to function with out buying parts.

Poast a picture so we can seel the reel.

Tony, no biggie but just trying to tidy up the board. Just thought you wanted information but if you'd like to sell, just change the title and I'll move it back to the "for sale" section.

Confusing Reel

Post by m3040c »

The Penn Seaford is one of the first models of Penn's production reels. I have a catalog number 12 (approximate catalog vintage 1945) in front of me and the Seaford is not in this catalog. I would like to see a picture of the Logo on this reel. I believe Mr. Araye50 is right about the handle. The handle on your Seaford I think is wrong. That plastic football handle is definitely 1940's and very unlikely to be on a Seaford.

I will put a few pics in this posting of a Seaford that I have. I believe my Seaford is a correct late 1930's reel. It has the waffle style clicker and a plastic bell shaped handle knob.

If I had to put a value on your reel I would say, $22.48 give or take a 12 dollar bill or somewhere in that vincinity. In reality one never knows, last month I saw a Penn Squidder 140 sell for over $400. If you catch that same group of buyers you may set a new price level for Seaford's. Go for it...

An early 3 post Seahawk, pull out handle free spool, in fair-good condition, went for $40 at the biggest internet auction last week. I'd forgotten about the uncommon reel completely.

I had to keep that one a bit quiet. I will post some pictures of it when I get it.

The seller of that Sea Hawk presented it as a "Retro Reel". I was very happy to get it at that price, the biggest problem with the reel is that the foot was cut and the paint was gone off the handle but I think it has the 3 post Jacobs side plates and that makes the reel for me. I do not know what kind of clicker button it has, that will be a surprise, I am hoping it has the smooth round button. The plating on the reel looked excellant.

Congrats! That's the 1. Would've liked to have it myself. I suspect you'll be able to swap a later reel stand for the nasty cut off. Only mentioned it as a price guide for asoteric collectible Penns.

I have a stand from a early four post Sea Hwak for it and a good handle from the same reel. When all is said and done I will post a new thread.
