Garcia 1430/1431 Automatic Fly Reels - Who Made Them?
I am researching Garcia for an article I am writing, and would appreciate some help on who made the Garcia 1430 and 1431 automatic fly reels for Garcia. The reels that I have are from the 1960's and are marked "made in U.S.A.". Garcia did not manufacture reels in the U.S. but imported reels from various countries. Anyone have some ideas? Thanks.

Terry, I wouldn't mind knowing either. There are several reel manufacturers that sold automatic reels that are pretty much identical except for colors. SB,Garcia,Plfueger,H-I,Shakes too name a few. Try a search on ebay for automatic fly reels and see what pops up. Good Luck in your search and let us know what you find...

GARCIA 1430-1431 AUTOMATIC FLY REELS - WHO MADE THEM
Kim,
The automatic fly reel manufacturers in the U.S. during the 1960's were Shakespeare, Martin and Perrine. I'm not sure that H.I. was still making reels, but hopefully a Horrocks Ibbotson collector can tell us. I believe that Shakespeare made South Bend's automatic reels for them.
My best guess as to which U.S. manufacturer made the Garcia automatics would be that either Shakespeare or Martin made them off of tooling that Garcia paid for and owned. Shakespeare was a arch competitor of Garcia's at the time, so I would have to wonder whether they would be willing to make Garcia reels on a contract.
Martin would have also been in competition with Garcia, but they were a much smaller company and probably would have enjoyed a big contract.
What I need is to have an ORCA "automatic fly reel expert" pull one of the Garcia reels apart and see if they can identify the manufacturer based on the parts or methods of manufacture.

Terry,
I know competition was great. The bottom line was/is PROFITS! Enterprise manf. did a great deal of trade reels to their competitors, yet they still made money... Others follwed suit. I've seen the ones I mentioned to you and they look they same other than some minor tooling. Insides may be different but the expert will have to confirm this. Time will tell since these reels are realatively new. Thanks.
