Helical spinning reels

Post by snoekjaeger »

Some time ago I bought a boxed Helical trout size, half bail.
On the reel it said Patent 383438
The leaflet in the box mentions Patents 33008/9

I did not really pay any attention to it at the time.

I received another Helical troutsize I bought on Ebay.
I bought it because it had a manual pick-up (v/s the half-bail version I already had) :D

BUT this one has Patents 33008-33009 on it

So... why has the half-bail a Patent number different from the box (as seems to be the case usually) :?

And why does the manual pick-up version has the same Patent numbers as in that box I already had :? :? :?

I think they made many trials before they figured it out - and maybe they never really did quite figure it out. I have a boxed reel that came with the wrong handle. So I bought a gutted reel for the handle (cheap, conveiently enough) - it doesn't fit the other reel . So I gather than there were many manufacturing changes in these reels and maybe the boxes couldn't keep up.

as many of these as were made, its likely the boxes and reels weren't matched, but have been jumbled together over the years. The good news is that you are straightening some of it out.

I guess you've noticed these are not the sturdiest reels ever made...

Indeed, these are not the sturdiest reels ever made but for now they are still fairly cheap (compared to other early/earlier English spinning reels).
With all the different ones to be found they make an interesting subject to collect for me. I only hope the current prices will stay this way for some time

But I would like to know if there are other collectors out there that also have a Helical troutsize with "Patents 33008-33009" engraved on the reel ?
I have only had contact with a few other collectors, but none of them have one like mine with this Patent reference on it. Their reels all have Patent 383438 engraved :?

Or is there a collector with a Helical troutsize box that has a Patent number other than 33008/9 ?

I would like to add a question..
Nobody seems to know (or wants to tell  ) the difference between the Helical and Helical Twin versions ?
Anyone has a pic of a Twin :?:
PS : this is a NON-e..o..i.. question
All I have that is Twin-related is a spare spool

Or is there a UK forum about old tackle ?

Seen the bidding on Ebay for these reels there should be enough collectors out there that could help me (I hope !)

Not sure anyone is interested... but I managed to solve the patent issue !
Took me some time but I finally found the original patent.
What caused the confusion... the number...
Solution ? THEY BELONG TO THE SAME PATENT !
33008 is the application number (this number is granted when the patent is applied for, in stead of mentioning PAT PEND they mention the application number...)
383438 is the publication number of the patent when it is granted !

Now... it would be to easy to conclude reels/boxes marked 33008 are before the patent granting date, that is not sure as the application number is still valid ones the patent is granted (they are POST Nov.28, 1931 ofcourse).

BUT any boxes/reels marked 383438 are POST Nov.17, 1932

Patent is on the name of Albert Edmund Rudge, no surprise there AND UNITY WORKS.
Application date Nov.28, 1931 (33008/31) and Feb.10, 1932 (3924/32)
Accepted on Nov.17, 1932

I have got the original patent in a .pdf file, if someone is interested just let me know and I'll mail it to you (don't tell me there's thousands of you now !). Also found 2 other spinning reel patents on the name of the Light Casting Reel Company Ltd. Redditch and Martin Frank Baker, Patents 361601 and 409833 for those of you that are interested.
