Hi

DAM has been making reels since 1885.

there are about 3 variations on this reel. These are all prewar reels. The oldest reels have 4 pillars and are more ornately finished. The later version(s) has 3 pillars at 120-degree intervals. This forms a thumbing hole for RHW operation.
Nice little fly reels. A good friend fishes one on light cane.

these are very good reels, generally better than the similar-looking UK crank handle brass reels.

In VG+ condition with full marks and a good clicker, I would say value is $65-85.
(a good photographer might get more on ebay)

come to think of it, finish-wise, I believe there is fourth version.
I saw one once that had the goat emblem stamped on a side plate, and is definately the oldest and most desirable. This one would probably bring the price up.

that is the later version - I'm counting the foot as a pillar. So you have the version with the thumb gap for adding drag.

There's actually two of this version with different finishing - smooth around the edges is the last version.
The version before had radial grooves at the outside edge of the side plates for decoration.

I've had three of these reels - all different versions, and never photographed one of them - I'm bad.

no catalogs to pin down the date, but I'm suspecting 20s into 30s.
That is a very pretty version of the reel.

They were making these reels when they were hungry - between the wars. Essentially trying to cut out the British in their own market. They ended up making a better reel.
