Something I Picked up at the Allentown NFLCC Show-----

Post by m3040c »

Being a Penn collector of a sort, I am always looking for a special one. Well I lucked out. They do not come much more special than this.

I know Brian, you got yours first. It is still cool. :D

These are about as simple you can get in a fishing reel. The only problem with this old Penn is the mainshaft bushing is worn beyond limits but it is what it is. It runs and drives and is 100% original.

This is everything. No wonder Penn made money.

Here is the "K" in the partial circle on the inside of the right side plate.

Here is the reel together and cleaned. Not bad.

Nice reel Mike! I wonder if that's one that's been accounted for by the fellows keeping track? Did the seller have any information for you?

the seller

This is one of the Model F's that has been accounted for. The seller had two of these and according to him there are 8 known (yours included, I asked) but those are his words not mine. Personally, I know of five. The reel I purchased at the show has excessive wear in the mainshaft bushing which causes just enough wobble in the handle to sometimes make the main gear slip on the spool gear. I feel this happens with these reels (I have two 3 pillar Sea Hawks [same as the Model F] and have seen others with the same problem) because the shaft bushing is brass rather than the bronze it should have been. I am splitting hairs here. It really makes no difference, they are what they are and they are rare.
He also had, at the show, a Model K star drag version that was "not for sale". Funny thng about the K side plates. The shaft collar on the handle side always seems to be broken no matter how well the reel works. I have a Long Beach and a Penn Kingfisher with the Jocobs three post side plates and they both run smooth as silk but the Bakelite collars on both reels have small pieces cracked out. That can not happen with the Model F because of the brass main shaft bushing.

Anyways, it was good to hear from you. Wish I was where you are, it is starting to get cold here in NYC.
