Helical spinning reels v/s Helical Twin

Post by snoekjaeger »

Hi guys,

Probably a stupid question, but can someone tell me what is the difference between the Helical and Helical Twin version ?
Have been looking around and reading a buch of books but can't find any information or pics on the Twin version
B.t.w. I have 2 Helical myself, it's just that I would like to know how to recognize the Twin version

I have a spare spool that is marked "Helical Twin", but that doesn't really help in identifying the reel :?

Some time ago I put a topic in this forum about the Helical and their patent numbers, it is my guess the different patent-numbers on my Helical's could be explained that one has the body cover of a Twin (IF it would fit ofcourse

here's the '34 Alex Martin cat

do you think the Twin is the same as the Duplex?

I've seen Helical reels with the same finger pickup.

better view of the Duplex pickup from the '39 Allcocks cat

The were so many variations and changes on Helicals that it's hard to find parts reels with the parts you're looking for. I've yet been able to match the handle on mine.
Interested in a nice box, a nice reel with the wrong handle and a reel missing the drive gear?

Hi,

I don't think the Duplex is the same as the Helical Twin (unless the same was sold under a different name, anything goes).
The Duplex was made by J.W.Young for S.Allcock to sell them.
The Helical reels were made by the Helical Casting Reel Co.

In Ben Wright's book I can find 3 different Helical :
the Helical as from 1933, the Helical-Twin as from 1938 and the Helical-Twin Super as from 1939. each available in a trout or larger salmon size, and with manual or half-bail pick-up, resulting in 12 different Helical's in total.

As I have just starting collecting these I am very interested in the box, perhaps even in the reel with the wrong handle and the one missing the drive gear. Feel free to make a proposal to
I just have got to watch my budget as I have been buying a lot lately..

Hi,

I tried replying to your email but got an error message saying somethiçng like "User unknown". Don't know if you email reply address was correct ?

Anyway, how much would you like for only the box ?
Does it have the Helical paper still in it ?

Best regards,
Jean-Paul
