These spools came with an ABU Cardinal 4X, one on the reel, the other as a spare (reels are not for sale b.t.w.).
They have a white plastic rim in stead of the regular red funel wire.
Material is a lighter type of plastic compared to the regular ABU
Cardinal spools. Anyone seen these before ?
Are these Japanese replacements perhaps ?
They fit perfect !
Jean-Paul
Jean-Paul, I bought several aftermarket Cardinal spools because I had a few of the old ones split at the joint under the outer lip. That problem is fairly common when line is left on spools for some time. I still use Cardinals for fishing, so I took all the line off the old spools and packed them away. I only use the new ones. Notice the seam lenthwise instead of behind the outer lip? The new spools are definitely thinner but seem to work fine. There weren't any shallow spools available when I ordered, and mine don't have the white border. That border may have been done by the previous owner, or you may have yet a different aftermarket model from mine.
You could try to get some of the metal spools that are now for sale here and there, one is blank/alu/silver and marked in white letters ABU Cardinal, the other is gold metal and marked ABU Cardinal 33 CDL.
They are marked on the package Made in Sweden but I don't believe so, not that it matters, they are good quality, just a little expensive...
Father was walking through the factory one day and found that the turret lathe operator was making spools for a Cardinal 4. He thought father would fire him, but instead father said "you're making a couple of those for me, right? I've seen one and it was beautifully made. It has a large brass button with a brass collar.
I think it's too bad that ABU-Garcia never tried (re)making old spools in a better quality. A quality that fully matches their reels. If they did it would be something like on J-P's pic's above. Even these spools are not original (cause I don't think they are either) I will admit that judged by Jean-Paul's pics of the especialy the 33CDL spool, it is extreemly nice and would probably fit the 33CDL perfectly (in colour too I think/hope?).
But then again - if it's not original then who cares
I saw one of the Aluminum coloured go for $91 in ebay two months ago. It's mentioned in Ben Wright's Spinning Reel Report for October http://orcaonline.org/images/pixel.gif?october06.htm
Anyways, I would save my money and buy something original instead... but that's my humble opinion. I'm sure someone will disaggree on this, unless it's for actual fishing and not for collecting.
JP, I never saw any ABU spools like this before with the white plastic 'line-guarding' on them. They look kinda strange. Do you remember from where you got the reel and the spools?
Regards,
Bo
The spools are "match" spools made especially for the UK market.
Match fishing required very light lines sometimes 1/2 pound breaking strain. The built up spool ensured that you would not require hundreds of yards of line to fill it. Abu introduced the white band and various other devices to help prevent the very fine lines getting tangled.
i have bought some abu spools for the abu cardinal 44 reels from the fine folks at pure fishing. i had the part number earlier today; don't know where it is now. i believe they had a few dozen in stock when i got mine- back last summer or so.
also you can get the gator grip handles yet from gator grip. model is gg-8 for cardinal 3 and 4 reels.happy new year to youns. woody
The silver spools are by Pure Fishing only available in Japan. I bought one off Ebay for $40 buy it now... $40 seems to be the going Japan retail price...
Correct. The shallow spools for the 44's are English Match spools.
Been a good time for Cardinals. Recently picked up the 3X from Japan for $250. Beautiful piece of kit and comes with one black alloy spool.
Also got a lucky buy from Ebay from UK. 44X in dark brown in excellent 8 out of 10 shape for £40 Buy it now. Very happy less than $80 US.
Now wondering if Japanese Pure Fishing will take the logical step and make a small number of 33X reels in dark brown
Here's a link for Japan Pure Fishing site. You can see what is currently available along with Japanese retail prices. Never understtod why Abu Garcia wouldn't make some of these remake items along with the much improved metal spools available over here in N. America? Surely they could sell enough to make it worth while... Meanwhile who fishes their current low quality stuff?
