Magic Reel Company, Denver Co.

Post by Monty Shows »

My late father left me reel manufactured by the Magic Reel Co. It was my grandfathers' reel and I believe that it may have been made in the 40s.
It looks like a fly reel, but is heavy, made of stainless steel. It looks to be a top mounted reel, has a swing out gate that I can't figure out, a brass pull button that changes the clicker and possibly the retrieve speed. The Drag is finger operated.
It has been used but is in good condition. Does any one out there know anything about this company or this reel. I will attempt to post some photos, but it will be awhile.

It's a spining reel to use on a flyrod - fish with light mono line, lures and bait.

Other manufacturers include Wright-McGill Fre-line, and Johnson 80A.
I'm sure if you search this board you can find some information.

No luck at that link. Do you know where I might find some paper on this company?
I did see on e-bay that somebody has an ad for this company, but no real info.
Thanks

The real (reel) information on this company can be acquired by reading COLORADO REELS, by Gary Carbaugh (who is an ORCA member and posts on this board) and Dick Spurr. The chapter on the Magic Reel gives the history of the company along with reprinting the reel instructions and some advertisements.

This book was available in the ORCA store, but I'm not sure if it is still available.

Thanks. The store still has some. I will order one. Does this reel have any value beyond the sentimental family value?

The value is modest. For the various reels of this style, I've seen them sell anywhere from $15 to $65 on ebay, but the middle of this range is probably realistic.

Well thanks alot for the info. I had no intention to sell it in the first place.
I am going to order that book, and see if I can track down when my grandfather first came by this reel. As good a condition its in I may try and use it for some pan fishing fun. I assume it was designed for trout fishing the mountain streams of the rockies, so it might be fun to go after some crappie and other panfish with it.
Thanks again. I'll watch this post for any other comments any one might have.
