Stuck Spool on a Montague Trout Reel

Post by Steve K »

:x I recently picked up an old Montague hard rubber/nickle silver trout reel that has the name "Trout" inscribed on the fron plate.
The reel looked to have been submerged in water at one time and was basically locked up.
I have removed the handle and back plate and have begun the process of cleaning the reel.
However, the spool will not come off the front plate.
I have it turning but it is still somewhat stiff, and I wish to clean and lubricate the area behind it.
On the face plate side, there is a small what looks to be slightly recessed brass sleeve that turns with the squared shaft of the spool that the handle screws into.
Any ideas on how to safely remove the spool is appreciated.
Thanks
Steve K. :)

Dale...You had added that pics are to follow.
I think I understand what you are saying...
I assume :x (hate that word) that the longer screw could strip or shear off due to the level of corrosion.
Once I see the pics to ensure I'm on the right track, I will give this a try and report back.
Thanks again for an idea on how to resolve this issue.

Steve,

Here is disassembly TIP I used to remove a frozen handle/drive gear on a Horrocks-Ibbotson 100Yd Huron saltwater reel. The process follows:

1. disassemble side plate with frozen handle on the drive gear post.
2. remove the crank nut and crank to disassemble reel
3. after disassembly replace the crank (You will need the crank in place to get leverage to stop twisting when turning the push screw.)
3. Insert a longer (PUSH) screw in place of short original crank nut screw.
4. Turn the long push screw into the crank nut to force the post off the gear.

Photos follow:

Works like a charm if you have similar hardware:http:

This last photo shows the object of the operation, i.e., get the drive gear apart from the post. There must be a lot of other frozen reels that this could work on.

Hope this helps.

Dale

Notes: 1st photo shows reel & PUSH screw.
2nd photo shows the problem - a stuck gear.
3rd photo shows the way to load to unstick.[/quote]

Hey Dale, That a great tip with good photos. You need to send them to Richard Lodge for a Reel News article.

Dale:
Great pics. :D Thank you for taking the time to do this.
My reel is not a mulyiplier. It is a center pin type hard-rubber trout reel.
Would this strategy still work?
Thanks

Steve,

If your reel has an internal thread, and you can keep the frame from twisting while turning the Push Screw, it should work. If you don't have an internal thread, some other technique should be possible. If you could post a photo, that would be a helper.

:D Dale:
I tried your idea with a screw and I believe it did help me get the additional leverage that I was needing to get the spool loose from the head plate.
Attached is a pic of this little 80 yard beauty after I have just finished the cleaning and lubrication efforts.
Dale...Thanks again for the technique and great pics.
I look forward to using this reel later this spring when I fish some small streams in the western North Carolina mountains.
