Old Ocean City 250 yd reel

Post by qwapaw »

Good evening. I just aquired an Ocean City Brigantine 250 yd reel. This is an old all Bakelite reel that does not have a star drag on it. It was made in Philidelphia PA. The only markings are on the foot of the reel. It is in solid condition and seems to work fine. It has what looks like string on it. I know some Ocean City Reels are more desired than others and was just wondering if this is one of them. I don't collect Ocean City so it will be for sale or trade for a South Bend reel. I can send photos, but still don't know how to post them yet. Any help from my fellow Orcans would be great. Thanks, Dan U

Merv, Thanks for photo prep.

My two cents re this reel.

Maybe not too valuable, but this reel can be cleaned and polished to be a show peice. I have several. Metal is plated brass. If the plating is gone, the brass becomes brilliant.

In an OC 250 yard reel perhaps only the 112 & Bay City are more common, however your Brigantine is an early one, probably from the late 30's. Most you see have the familiar 'coin' OC emblem fitted into a depression in the headplate.

In average used condition its an inexpensive classic, most often in the $20 price range, less if anything is broken on it.

OC did make a fleet of odd named models that were all much the same. I get the feeling they put a localized name of some just to sell them in those areas.

Thanks Merv for helping with the photos. I'll sit down a figure out how to add them soon. Also thanks for all the input on the reel. I think everything works and the clicker is very srong. Looks like a heavy string on it so I don't know what it was used for. I can keep the reel or I'll trade it for a South Bend reel of equal value. Anyway thanks for all the responce. Dan U
