A picture would help. The only 430 I'm familiar with is a 430SS, which is an open face spinning reel.

Hello Gadabout,

Here it is on the Bay. Now if I can get some help from someone as to the origins of this reel I may take the bidding higher. As we speak I am the second bidder and everytime I bid the reel up some other guy beats my bid.
I have never seen this Penn before. The parts are made in Japan and the reel is assembled here, the box looks like a run of the mill 1960's box. In the ad, the seller is saying that the reel was never marketed and he is also from Pa., the home state of Penn.

I like odd Penn reels but I am not sure whether I should keep bidding on this Japanese-American hybrid.

NEED HELP WITH SCARCE PENN REEL

Post by Ben »

Hi Randy and Gadabout,
The 430 is a closed Face spinning reel. the parts were made in Japan and the reels were assem here. after the first production run was made Penn decided not to market these but some had been sent out to dealers.
yes they are a bit rare for that reason. they also made other models.

The story on these reels was written by Doug Brace for the January 2005 issue of The Reel News, page 15.
