Gold Plated South Bend 550 A Casting Reel???

Post by Kevin McJunkin »

Is this factory or did someone gold plate it? Knobs are loose, I'm guessing someone took them off for the plating.

The deep gouges in the handle nut (and elsewhere) seem to be plated over. There were a handfull of gold anodized #60 reels given as casting prizes about 15 years after the #550B was gone, but there weren't any others to my knowledge. Jim

Thanks, Jim, for the info about the gold anodized #60 South Bend reels. Yes, the gouges have been plated over. Maybe the previous owner caught a nice fish with it. Kind of like bronzing baby shoes.

Are you sure that's not just spray painted rather than plated?

It doesn't seem reflective enough to be plated does it?
