A Real Reel Story

Post by Jerry J in OK »

This past week-end another club I belong to (the WATC) had a booth at the Oklahoma City Tackle Show. I had my Pflueger metals and reels displayed and myself and a couple other guys had a bunch of stuff for sale. During the 4 days, I don't know how many hundereds came by the booth or how many people I chatted with but it was a bunch. This one instance is the one that stuck with me...I hope you enjoy it...Jerry

.."Sunday right after noon a guy and his wife came to the bootha and he asked me if I had a Pflueger Nobby reel (my Pflueger reel and metal collections was displayed). I asked him which one red, light blue, or silver. He said silver so I went and got the anodized aluminum Nobby for him. He took it, looked it over, reeled it, acted like he was casting it, and then looked at it some more. While he was doing this, he told me this story. He said that he remembered his dad having a Pflueger Nobby reel when he was very young (the guy was 54). When he went fishing with his dad he got to use it a little but his dad never let him use it by himself. He told me he could see his dad fishing with it and wishing he could use it more. Then the guy said he didn't know what ever happened to that reel since his dad passed. I told him I could get him one if he wanted one but he told me it just wouldn't be the same. He handed it back and, as I put it back it the display, he just looked at it. When he and his wife were walking away, he stopped, turned around, and said, with a smile, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR LETTING ME RELIVE THOSE MEMORIES, IT HAS BEEN A LONG TIME..and then walked off...

To me , this is what it is all about...

Hello Jerry:

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. You certainly have a clear view of what is really important, at least for many of the folks in our ORCA family. Very well stated. My wife just mentioned that these are more than just little pieces of metal. "They are part of someone's life".

Thanks again.

Thanks Jim...She is right...I also have a Norka that is engraved on the tail plate...TO JOE FROM THE BOYS with a date in 1938...That was one experience I will never forget...

Take care...

Made me smile as I thought of my dad and his old metel rod with a Bata reel when old one eye, a local legend of a fish, grabed his bait and he spit out his cigar, dad not the fish. The fish lived a good long life and mother caught up with dad over the cigar smell and language he used to tell the rest of the family of that darn fish. That reel sits high in my display case and no amount would get it. Great Memories  There must be great stories behind a few trillion reels out there!

Jerry, Thanks for a great post. For much the same sentiment, I have always enjoyed a reel that has an old name engraved on it more than one that doesn't, they just have a little more story behind them and get my imagination running just a little faster. Now, I think I'll go get out dads old tackle box and relive some more memories. Thanks
