ABU Ambassadeur 5500 G

Post by Thom »

I was digging through a box of my old fishing gear and found my old Ambassadeur 5500G (gold color). I have only used it a couple of times, It is in mint condition and I also found the original cardboard box with the small wrench, oil, and plastic spool adapter. Any idea what this reel may be worth? I bought it back in the 70s. #720200. Rumor has it that it was in production for only one year and that only 1000 were made. True or false? Thanks for any additional help!

8) :) :!:  :type: ALMOST all the gold color garcias have a decent price, mine is a 5500 and a pale type of gold. I have seen the bright gold as Mike Wohlever in Amherst had one, and it brought a rather strong price. I dont think I would fish with it, just wipe it down, and get a ambasador book and also some of the folks on this ( sounding board) most likly will give a beter idea to you than I can. Ambassadeur 5500G

Thom,

I read your post earlier and I have serious reservations about your reel. Please recheck the model again. There was never a model called the 5500G. There is a 5500, a 5500C and a 5500D. The 5500C & 5500D were never available in a gold colored finish. The plain 5500 did come with a gold, (champagne finish). Now for the part that really bothers me. You stated the reel foot number is 720200. That number indicates the frame is for a 1972 model (72), made in Febuary (02), and was the first version (00). None of these models were made that early. The 5500C came out in 1973 the side plates were dark gun metal blue with chrome frames, the 5500D late 1977 or early 1978, and the 5500 in 1975. There was a 5500CDL that had light blue side plates and 14K gold plated frame , star drag, screws, line guide, and end caps. The reel was marked 5500C on the left side plate not 5500CDL. There were 500 units made. That reel was not made untl late 1975 with most of the 500 untis being made in 1976. If possible please email me some pics of the reel, perferably a view of each side plate, one of the reel foot number, and a front view. Maybe after seeing some pics of it I can determine what reel you have. My email address is: I wish I had something more positive to tell you but without pics it is very hard.
