Wood and brass star back, Sun, Patent No 13388/85

Post by Query »

Hi,

I found this amongst in my late Father's shed and want to find out more about it. I have tried to date it using web patent searches but do not even know what country it originated from. I am thinking of selling it on Ebay, the brass is very tarnished though it appears in full worning order, should they be cleaned or left "as is" 2 for the collector?

:) 8) :!:  dont clean it with any ( strong cleaners, a little oil ie. or wax will help it, and also tend to take out the dryness in the wood! leave the cleaning to the person that buys it! Is that reel 5&1/2 in across the plate? ans is it wood? you may want untill our more knowlegable people get a chance to read your post! We have some members that colect these types of reels. Also if you find more items , anything for fishing please put it on the board, there are experts in Our club that can identifie most anything. Why don you join ORCA? you will find it interesting and educational. your OHIO Conection Col. Milton lorens aka SWIM JIG

Thanks for your advice. Yes it's brass and wood. From memory, I'd say it was between 4 and 5 inches, I will measure it later. Hopefully one of the experts may be able to help and I can always send pictures on request.

Wooden Reel

Post by Reel Geezer »

The reel undoubtedly came from Great Britian. Without a photo even that much is difficult to speculate. Wooden reels were very common in Britian from the 1800s up until at least WWII. Do a search on eBay for "wooden reel" and see what you come up with. There should be something similar to yours there.

Do these help and it's actually only 4 inches.

I've seen a few similar on Ebay and even found the same Patent No. reel on a google search but nothing that actually dates it. It's possible the /85 refers to 1885 but I wouldn't like to be that presumptious!

Thanks for looking.

:) 8) :!:  :type: Well its definetly ENGLISH, the familiar cross patern is the give away about 1875 to 1892 era, It is a nice reel, and with some real easy cleaning, we use any paste wax with caruba in it and a very soft cloth ie. a gun patch and a cotton cloth like a old pajama material will work wonders, I dont recomend taking off the patina, as this adds class and dont polish the bras just lift the seface dirt with the caruba wax! a drop or to of oil lightly applied to the moving shats will make it turn without damage to the metal shafts. use only oil with silicon or teflon, NO WD 40 or cheap motor oils! your Ohio conection Col. Milton Lorens aka SWIM JIG You have a nice reel to start your colection!

Your reel was made by Rueben Heaton in Birmingham England. The patent is for the PATENT SUN REEL taken out in 1885 but never granted. Consequently the reel can be dated 1885 to 1901. Patents in England expire after 16 years. There is no record in the UK Patent Office as the sealing fee was not paid.
