A Upgrade in my big game Series

Post by m3040c »

Today, I was relaxing, reading the auction report in the March 2007 issue of Reel News and to my surprise a real was mentioned in the end of the report that I purchased. Now it is very rare that anything I buy gets noticed by anyone but me, so this made me feel special and also like I should share the reel with other members and maybe get some history lessons too.

As I have mentioned here before, I am building a Big Game reel collection, starting with a Penn 1/0 and ending with a Penn 16/0 with all the in-between reels coming from different makers. I have almost all the sizes and I am now upgrading when I see something that impresses me. Sometimes I go a little nuts too and over pay. In this case I do not know if I overpaid but the reel is certainly a beauty. It is a Otto Zwarg 6/0 that I paid $528.88 for.

Enough talk, it is time for pics:::

First pic is the reel from a few different views,

At this point I would really appreciate a history lesson from those that know more than me. From my limited knowledge of Otto Zwarg, I believe he was a boss or "Head Reel Maker" for Edward Vom Hofe. Mr. Zwarg continued the EVH tradition after EVH went out of business, exactly when this was I am not sure, sometime after WW II maybe. A big question in my mind is that Ocean City also continued making Vom Hofe reels. How could this happen without these two reel makers infringing on each others products in the marketplace?

Here are the stamping that are on the reel. Of course the manufacturer is self explanitory on the bearing caps but the number on the edge of the foot crossbar must have a meaning, does anyone know what it represents? A serial number or a production number? The numbers on the bottom of the foot I believe represent the model number and the reel size. Anyone that can verify my feelings of what these numbers represent feel free to jump in.

And finally, the foot. I suspect it has been cut. The gentleman I bought this reel from does beautiful work, so there is no sign of any tool marks on the foot that would show a cut foot. The reel is finely polished but I believe the foot was cut way back when, what do you guys think?

Now I will end with the story of the sale and the very professional seller that I purchased this reel from. The seller name was Dave Gaustad. When I received the reel, the spool was binding and the free spool lever did not work. Needless to say, I was disappointed but I have done business with this man before and knew he would be open to communications. When I emailed him about the problem he was very concerned. I did not want to take the reel apart myself to repair it and communicated that to Mr. Gaustad. He was in total agreement and we decided that I would mail the reel back to him for repair or refund, which ever it worked out to be. It turned to be a mistake in the assembly of the free spool lever mechanism which he repaired and retruned the reel to me. The reels now operates like a brand new reel. I couldn't be happier and recommend this EBay seller to anyone. His EBay user name is "Tacklerus" and he stands behind his product. I am sure he is known by some of the members here but I wanted to plug him because he is a very busy seller but will take the time to make a customer satisfied.

Thanks for listening, hope you enjoyed the posting. :)

Nice reel, Mike. Many of us have known Dave for a long time and he is an ORCA member. Way to go Dave cool-thumb

I'd tend to think the foot is original. They were made uneven. Sometimes even offset to the left or right on other similar models.

I think I knew the previous owner of your reel. If so, you do have a special addition to your collection as I remember him being a very nice fellow to me.

I have known Dave for over 30 years, and he has wonderful reels. Unfortunately, he has not been an ORCA member for the past several years. Someone should talk him into rejoining.

Thanks for the info on the foot Brian. That is good to know and also that the reel has a good history.

Phil, I will drop Dave an email. I'll tell him he is missed at ORCA and some old friends want him back.

Neither one of you mentioned whether I overpaid or not, maybe you are just omitting a comment on my price because it was high but it really does not matter. With the value of today's American dollar I feel that the price could, at the worst, be Top Retail.

I don't think there is such a thing as overpaying if you like the reel. I've paid some high prices for some things but if you want them you just need to go for it. When i bought my raised pillar summit i had to go on a diet of mac and cheese for like 3 months. :D

Hello younguy, You know, I used to be a young guy but I can not remember when. Anyways, I agree with you to a degree. I do not think I would have ate mac and cheese for three months to buy this reel. I am glad you survived the ordeal.

Zwarg collector

Post by Jack Bright »

A knowledgeable collector of subject is George McCabe in Ohio at
440-708-1270, don`t think he has a computer, but can probably provide
the info you seek. Imagine he`ll be at Dowagiac for Nat`l.

It wasn't too bad i guess kind of grows on you after a while...

I wish i could help you out with the markings on your reel, that ones in great shape.

What reel did you upgrade from in your 6/0 slot?

Thanks Jack.

The question of what I upgraded from is a good one. In the near future I will be selling that reel but will offer it here, in the For Sale section, first. It is a Julius Vom Hofe B Ocean 6/0. A good, clean, normally functioning reel but not polished like this Otto Zwarg. Price will be in the mid $300's.
