old fly rod values

Post by RonLewis »

I have an acquaintance who has several Powell split cane bamboo flyrods, approx 80-100 years old. Belonged to his great grandfather, who was an avid sportsman who could afford the best. Any ideas as to how to determine their current value? Thanks in advance for any help.

Ron: Ebay completeds has a page worth of Powells that went off recently...url posted below or go to advanced search if it doesn't come thru. there are also some books out there and there used to be specific websites for fly rods...perhaps someone would know current sites. However, it's been my experience that the auctions probably give the top dollar values. best, je

Bamboo Powells

Post by reels4me »

The reference you recieved RE: E-Bay is for graphite rods. The bamboo
rods are generally worth more. Condition is a BIG consideration. Windings,
tip length(never broken) never re-varnished,unless by a pro the handle
clean, not chewed up. And lastly the length, the shorter the better a 7
footer is worth a couple hundred $ more than a 9 footer. All in all, from
$200 to $1000. Detailed pics. would help a great deal. Jack Bright

Given the age of the rods, I assume they are EC Powell rods, not Walt Powell. So, be careful when you research values.

Powell rods

Reelsmith makes a very good point! I was assuming they were
Walt Powells' rods.

Powell trout fly rods are less common than the traditional 9ft bamboo rods he produced for the pioneer Northwest steelheaders such as ralph Wahl and judge olsen. due to the harsh conditions of winter fly fishing and the strain of large fish, most long Powell fly rods were well -thrashed. any truly mint Powell is a rare find. Son walton Powell built can rods of his own design beginning in 1950 and established a business apart from E.C. perhaps his most interesting contribution to the art of bamboo construction was the (Ulitimate Companion Fly ROD conceived with 2 butts and 3 tips which converted into both 7&1/2 and 8&12 rods. These neat circa 1990 sets came packed in a fine latigo leather case and were to be one of Waltons last creations. The Walton Powell Rod Company also fabricated Quality fiberglass fly rods in the 1970s and 1980s.
