I have an old (is there any other kind?) Progress. I am unable to remove the spool. The spool turns smoothly and easily, but while the screw comes out nicely, it appears it has frozen against the spindle. So...any ideas on how to remove the spool? Thanks, Spence Conley
what you may want to do is ( first take the click to the off position ie when reel spool turns you dont hear a click, take the screw out and soak with some HOppes gun cleaning fluid , just a few drops, let it penitrat about 15 min, now put the screw back in turn with your finger untill it seats, back out 2to3 turns NO MORE THAN THAT! then tap the screw head lightly with a brass or copper hammer or a piece of hard wood, the spool should move , if it has moved but wont come out push the spool back down untill seated on the bottom of the frame, take out screw and remove any bilt up material around the shaft, replace the screw until seated and back out 2 or three threads again and rap with the hamer or wood, it should now come off if not repeat all steps above untill the spool comes out! Hope this helps and gently produces excelent resuals, hurry it and you will wreck it! Col. milton Lorens aka SWIM JIG
When you remove the screw, run your figernail over the lip of the shaft! you maqy feel a slight rib, this would most likly been caused by too much tightning of the spindle screw, unless a replacement screw was used? The factory screw is a wide one with a recess on the tread part that allows the shaft ( not to colapse) the factory screw is aprox. 1/2 in accross and repeating my self is recesed under the bottom of the screw! if a replacement has been used then you will need to very carfuly file away the LIP until the spool will come off. SEND ME A SELF ADDRESED ENVELOPE in turn I will mail you back a copy of a factory manual on this reel. ADRESS IS ( COL. To answer the guest's question, I've had quite a few fly reels where the spool is rusted to the spindle and the spool turns smoothly. The nut, washer, or whatever holds the spindle to the backplate loosens and the whole unit turns.
You are very correct Phil, I never gave that one any thought, I looked at one of my new old stock 1774 progress reels, should that be the case, he would be best to leave it alone! as its a peened over shaft with a washer on the very botom that the spool rides on, the same for the click spring, its peened over, and than the reel was painted black! To guest. if this is the case, put your finger over the shaft at back of reel and if it turns when you turn the spool , just put it back together as it will be next to imposible to remove without damage to the whole reel! If the reel was used in or around SALT water that may be the problem! Phil thanks for the help on this one! Now Do I qulify for the old geasser patch? I have replacmet atrrteries in the ticker, talk to my dog more than bev, and now may have that forgetfull problem! ? Col. M. LORENS aka SWIM JIG
