Al Foss Reel

Post by Glen Brewton »

This is my first post to this board, so I hope I'm doing this right. I'm looking for information on a reel I recently purchased, an Al Foss Easy Control #3-25. Specifically, when was it made, and was it made by Heddon for Foss. Any info would be appreciated.

hey, Glen...you're not being ignored! I don't think anyone has a clue about your reel! i couldn't find anything in Stew's book under foss. Frankly, never knew foss did anything but the baits in the metal boxes (geez, love showing my ignorance...it's so easy! ). Can you post a pic of it? Does it resemble the Heddon reel or coxe? I'm sure all would like to have a look! j

Made in the 20's, very tuff real to find. All I know that it
was sold by Al Foss. The same company that makes the lures.

Foss Reel

This reel was a contract reel made for Al Foss. Full details on who, when and where can be found from our President, Andy Foster. He had had lots of these reels. Since he doesn't seem to read this site very often, I would suggest you email him. His email address is

:) 8) :!:  :type: The few that I have worked on, ie clean and lube and some minor replacement items appears to be a Chamberlin, made by the chamberlin target company in Cleveland ohio. As I recall ,these things have rather (tender screws in them, head came off one with just a bit of presure, the rest of the screws were vibrated lose with my ingraver tool with a pice of 1/8 in copper tubing on the tip. Anyway you do have a rather desirible item! dont break it! I have never personaly owned one. If you plan on keeping it then you may want to Very Carfuly clean it! They as i remeber with the dirt out of them were rather smooth running about like a (Okeh 625 made by af meisselbach in Elyria Ohio . Col. milton lorens aka SWIM JIG your Ohio Connection

Al Foss

Post by Andy »

Glen, I have had several Al Foss reels. There are two different styles, both saying Easy Control. One has a large metal drum for a spool, which I feel is a contract reel from Montague. The other looks identical to a Horton, but has a cork or wood spool. I feel this one is made by Horton, because the end cap threads are identical and the main gear is the same as a Horton. The handle is also like a Horton Meek 30 or 10. I hope this helps. Andy
