I have a problem regarding a South Bend Perfectereno, in that doesn't cast particularly well, to say the least. I have had the reel apart on a number of occasions, cleaned and greased all moving parts yet the problem persists.
Any suggestions as to 1. what the problem could be (The spool is not warped by the way); and 2. how it can be fixed, if indeed a problem exists?

Perfectoreno
Slan, the Perfectoreno non-removable tailplate oil cover was designed to take the place of the South Bend bail anti-backlash system. It just happened to be cheaper eliminating about 5 parts and some assembly steps. It never did work as well, and it's hard to turn off. It's nothing more than a larger surface area where friction slows the spool but you can't have a lot of oil on that surface. First make sure the problem isn't a bend in a spool journal. Here's what you can try if the spool is OK: Remove all the oil from that fixed cap an give it one shot of something very thin - even WD 40 would be better. Center the spool and then back off the adjustment cap on the headplate another turn. Thin any grease you used on the gears with oil and use light oil on the level wind screw gear - not grease. If that doesn't work, try what the factory did by special order (and this is a last resort). "Lap" it internally with a very mild abrasive (even toothpase) and hook it up to a high speed motor for a few seconds. If the reel survives, it will be cured. Jim

Jim,
Thanks for the reply and the advice. I have checked the spool and it seems to be OK, although I have noticed that there appears to be a fair amount of grease in the tailplate oil cover. I'll remove the grease and apply a light covering of oil.
Another thought struck me, however and I think I'll check the levelwind mechanism to see if perhaps this is kinked or warped, which would result in a reduction in performance. Failing that I think I'll leave the reel as it is, I don't want to ruin it all together.
Thanks again for taking the time out to reply, I really appreciate it.
