Just in case anyone was wondering what the relationship is I now have a photograph of the very first prototype of the spincast reel. I'm going to scan it and if someone will tell me how big the image is supposed to be I'll post it. It was made by R.D. Hull I think in January of 1948 because my documentation says that he was officially hired by the Zero Hour Bomb Company on Feb. 1, 1948. The reel was built inside a Stag brand beer can.
The other part of the relationship is the pick-up pin. As soft as fishing line is it will cut through a mild steel pick-up pin like a hot knife through butter. The first ones were made of carbide brazed to steel. Then they tried hard chrome, but it's rather difficult to put exactly .0002 inches (that's two ten-thousandths of an inch) of chrome on something. Eventually someone had the idea of using a ceramic pick-up pin. the pins were made by the Adolph Coors Brewing Co. of Golden, Colorado.
Tight Lines,
Clinton
