Info on old reels

Post by Primenybt »

Hello,
My grandfather asked me to try and find out about a couple of old reels. I hope you can help.

The first one's markings says

Leader
1736
Model 31

Made in Kalamazoo U.S.A.
Shakespear
Honor buit
Honor sold
Made in the U.S.A. Patented (Is on the part that would attach to the pole)

The second one's marking says
Abbey Castings (on the side with the crank)
Steel Pivot Bearing (on the side with the drag)
The number 80 is on the part that would attach to the pole

Both are much smaller then any newer reel that I have ever seen.

Abbey Casting Reel

Your Abbey reel was undoubtedly made by Montague for the retail firm of Abbey & Imbrie. The 80 is the size of the reel, with the number referring to the amount of line the reel would hold. It is probably from the 1910-30 era.
