What a neat idea. It would look nice full of talbot reels.

I saw this display on eBay and liked it a lot, although I like to display my reels at a slight slant so as to show off the front of the reel as well.

I use old wooden tool box trays. They are a little larger so like teal said you can display them at an angle. It makes for a nice display.

Saw dozens of larger 250 size reels in similar old wooden seltzer bottle cases at Webster fleamarket. IMO better for transport & storage, than display. Reels are truely Pigeon Holed, neccessitating excess handling to get a good look at them. Seen some liquor boxes recycled effectively to store reels.

I was wondering?

I have been wondering how to display reels other than bookshelves. A lot of my reels are smaller baitcaster type reels . Would you have shelves deep enough to keep boxes behind the reels, or keep the reels in the boxes, or have glass fronted shelves like at antique malls. Any thoughts. That coke case is neat, but it would be hard to find enough of them. There is a mall close to me that sells curved glass hutches with glass shelves and lighted (oak framing) for $200 each and that would save time! They could be added as needed, but I do have some larger penns that are heavy for glass. Thoughts? I have a private room that is long to accept about any kind of shelves.

There have been a couple of previous discussions and here's one:

Displays

I use a case with glass shelves but changed the the 1/8" glass to 1/4" for larger reels. The cases are not that wide so the glass is not spanning more than 18". Pretty solid, even for 5-6 large german silver reels. You'll see the cases on page two of the thread above.

This is how I display my reels when I am at a show. the case is an old VHS storage case that I added shelves to and then covered them with red felt.

Reel Displays

Old watch or jewelry display cases are great for smaller reels. You can find them sometimes at flea markets or at auction (particularly when the contents of a retail store is being sold). The display cases generally rotate so that reels can be seen without too much handling. Thanks.
