It's been kind of slow around here lately, so, how about posting a picture of a nice reel. Come on... let's see some reels !

Some of you guys will likely think this reel was made by one of the pflueger boys after having a bit too much to drink. Personally, I think it's julius vom hofe :)

Ron:

I guess we can't blame this contraption on julius. The Pfluegers signed it.

Paul: I hadn't seen your Akron. A beautiful reel. I assume that it's an 80? Perhaps it's just the angle of the pic, but I think the oil caps on your reel are different than the ones I've seen on the other 2 I've examined. Are the oil caps unusual on your reel ? (oh yeah---thanks for costing me about 300 bucks on the "Beaver" :)

re The Beav...yeah, glad I didn't jump into that slugfest! had it bookmarked :? In any event Joe, can you give us uninformed (that might only be me!) readership a play by play on that paddle on the tailstock side? Is that some sort of drag mechanism that can be applied and released in the heat of battle?

Brake?

Post by Brian F. »

Looks like a frankenshteen version of the Atlapac thumb break. Except I guess the pads are pressed laterally against the spool flange instead of radially into a drum like on the Atlapac? If it was an initial experiment by Mr. Adams for the Pfluegers, thank goodness they refined it.

Hey Joe! Good eye, you are right that it is not the standard 60 yd. model. (not that the 60 yd model is anything but super-rare itself) Can you believe this Akron is a 100 yarder? I couldn't. When I bought it from a great buddy (you know who you are) out east, it didn't really matter what size it was. I just knew I wanted it because it is "the ultimate Pflueger production casting reel" in my opinion, with only a couple others known to exist in collections. (I won't mention who, haha) The ultra rare 100 yd size was an extra bonus. Despite it's raw appearance, it is actually solid EX in condition. I just chose not to polish it. The original patina and overall condition tell me that this reel was probably in someone's attic or basement out of the weather. I tell ya, this one almost made my heart stop! The endcaps resemble some of the other early Pflueger styled caps. I have seen these type of endcaps on the Norka for sure and others that I cannot think of at the moment. I know what you mean though. My guess is that it was a different year of production perhaps?

Sorry about the Beaver. I never, ever expected it to go that high. I should have known that you spotted it! Well, if you ever get a duplicate, you know where to go now. ;-)

Ron MC, Maybe you are logging in with your own ID? Just a guess.

may not look like much, but it's as nice as they get. The patina on the lead finish feels like silk.
Imageoh, and thanks Paul.
