Unknown Fly Reel

Post by Joe Lucash »

Can anyone identify this reel--apparently from post WWII era. Only identification is probably British Registered Design # 843416 & 843417

(Here's Joe's reel)

What does it say between the two screw heads on the tail plate?

Between the two posts on the reel is stamped "REGD DESIGN No
843416 & 843417" which is encased by a stamped border.

My gut reaction was that J.W. Young would be the maker, but that's a slightly educated guess at best.

Joe,

I think what you have is a fly reel called the Rolls. I cannot be at all sure, but I think I have that reel (owned by my father) at our family's summer cabin on the Trinity River in northern California. What keyed me into that is the coat of arms, it stuck in my mind. I will not have a chance to actually look at my reel for some time, please let me know your email address so that I can confirm or deny. Alan Baracco

If that is a "Rolls" reel, it is undoubtedly a trade reel made for Herters. Everything Herters sold was "the world's finest" and most of their reels seemed to be made by J. W. Young or DAM and labeled "Rolls". I'd have to go out in the cold and check a Herters catalog to see if the coat of arms is the one George Herter dreamed up for his company.

I believe Phil is right, my reel is in a Herters box. Alan

the reel is a JW Young Pridex marked for Herters.
From the latch design, I would date the reel between 1962 and 1965.
(this reel is '58 to '61)
