Observation on dogs vs cats

Post by RAM »

At least once (typically several times) each year there is a heart warming (dog warming) item on TV, often national TV, about the rescue of a dog that has fallen through the ice on a river or a lake somewhere. Usually required the local EMS to extricate said dog from certain icy demise. Everyone cheers when dog is pulled into the boat.

I have been watching TV now for well over a half century and have never once heard of a cat having to be rescued from a hole in the ice. Maybe it was because no one wanted it rescued, but I suspect cats have better sense than to wander around on thin ice. Involuntarily rescued from a telephone pole or a tree perhaps (it would have come down on its own but some even more terrified woman had to see it "rescued"). As far as I know, no one has ever seen a cat skeleton on top of a telephone pole. Thought I did once, but it turned out to be a Possum skeleton. Shocking experience (for the Possum, not me).

Bad Bob (Also with enough sense to not wander out on a frozen river or lake. As for Young Guy, he can answer for himself!)

We have well over 30 inches of ice up here. I think the dogs are pretty safe! :D

Ram:

Generally those dogs that are rescued are full grown large dogs. I refuse to believe cats are smater than dogs in any way shape or form. Cats are just lighter. Though we once had a 20 pound cat.

Cats are just lazy and spoiled and probably wouldn't go out for a walk in the cold.

I have a cat and a dog and even though the dog takes more time to care for I'd dash out to save him in frozen water. The cat? ... only if my wife saw him too :P

Dave "O"-Didn't say cats were smart-only that they had enough sense to not go out on a frozen lake. Unlikely it could fall through no matter how much it weighed if it was smart enough to stay inside by a fire, use a litter box some dumb human has to clean out, and get fed twice a day without fauning all over the person doing the feeding. Doesn't take brains to go out and walk in the cold unless you had a good reason. The dogs that fall in don't have a good reason-just thought they could get somewhere that they could'nt get to in the summer, whether they needed to get to it or not.
If you think cats are always lazy you only need to see a good tomcat fight once-or watch one climb a tree with a pit bull after it.

Posted this once before: Univ. of TN Vet school posted a list of things they had removed from dogs stomachs. Included (among other things best not mentioned) an ENTIRE string of full-sized Christmas lights. Hey, that takes smarts!
PS to Young Guy-Saw some guys moving a two floor 60 ton house across a MN lake last week. Obvously dangerous to do with this global warming thing.

I've never seen any news story of a dog being removed from a tree or a telephone pole. Just shows they're too smart to climb trees and phone poles, or that they can get down on their own.

Just thank God that the Great Cat Migration only occurs once every 16 years...there are no cat boxes in trees! :D

Unfortunately, some cats never learn the art of Migration...acquired trait:

A great way to clean the toilet and the cat at the same time. Put some soap in the toilet, throw in the cat and quickly close the lid! Only takes a couple of minutes.

Well, have to say that I've never had a cat raise it's leg on my boot...something I can't say about a black and tan that is now barking a couple octaves higher...nor have I had my cat come bounding into the house and up on the couch after a nice round of rolling in possum feces. ...

However, I must also say that I've never had a dog puke down the heater vent...an event that occurred with regularity with my cat...incredible accuracy :D

I seen quite a few dogs spend a lot of time licking themselves down thar'...either that is not very smart or they were just showing off their athleticism. :?

What madness have I wrought?
BB

Had a friend that called his Bassett Hound "Ebs". Could only do three things well. For that matter, could only do three things, period-eat, bark, guess no. three. Actually, four things. As I recall,he (the Bassett) slept more than the cat did. But the "s" isn't for sleep.
