How do you store your reels?

Post by Baitrunner »

I have about 50 reels and am currently using the compost method of piling them on my bench in a hodge-podge of bins and boxes. Wanted to pick others brains on how they are storing the reels they don't have on display or are working on.

I use old cigar boxes to store the reels I'm not useing. You can find these in smoke or cigar shops and you can usually purchace them for $5.00 each.
In one box I store up to 6 Ambassaduer 45 - 5000 series reels. All I do is line the inside of the box with 1/8 in thick felt and use 1/8 in thick strips of Balsa Wood to seperate each reel.
Some of the smaller cigar boxes are just the right size to store 1 Pflueger 1895 type or Heddon Pal type reel.
Hope this helps.

well, I used to store my reels and lures...then I wondered why the H-e-doublehockeysticks i was collecting the stuff if it was going to be in boxes...mission over the past two years has been to get it out where I could see it, but for the most part, not have to dust it! i.e., in glass cases where i can stare at it all with little required maintenance. All the "kits"...i.e., reels in various states of repair..get bagged in zip-locks with smaller zip-locks for the small parts...and I have way too many of those, in spite of shipping off several kilos to Dick Janak, etc!

Store Them? As John says, why collect them if they aren't to be seen. Here is a picture of where I "Store" mine.

I also have shelves all over the house with reels on them. Dust? That just adds to the looks. Ha Ha Ha !

I agree with the guys, "storage" should be held to a minimum. I do use a carrying type case for freshwater baitcasters, however, it is a plastic case made by "Workforce", holds 14 reels with adjustabel dividers and can be purchased (at least here in CA and I suspect nationwide) at Home Depot. You are somewhat correct, Grasshopper. I do own ONE Shakespeare open face reel but it is a cutaway display reel. (I would have uploaded a picture but Paul's service wouldn't work this morning.) I do have maybe 20 Shimanos that I have been known to fish with but they are hid in a closet and out of sight from my Shakespeare reels. You know how picky those Shakespeares are. Why, one time I left a Penn out in the open and while I was sleeping, the Shakespeares ganged up on it and in the morning there were springs, spools and screws everywhere!

"I love the smell of salt air in the morning!" Unfortunately, the finishes on my reels don't like it all that much. My cases have small gaps between the frame and glass panels so dust and salt air is a problem. But like Harvey says, these are OLD reels we're talking about, right?

I'd post the photo again but thought you may be tired of seeing it as it's been all over the previous ORCA boards...Ah, what the heck, it's the only time I get to share my stuff!

Oh, by the way, the other half is in crown royal bags stuffed into drawers and boxes at home and work. No room for more cases but I'd get them out there if I did.

Almost no reels sit around here very long before they're cleaned, catalogued, and jammed into a cabinet. I rarely take apart more than one reel at a time, just in case there's an earthquake.

Here's one cabinet. (Sorry, but it's mirrored on the back, so it's tough to shoot.):

Hey Clinton, is that a fishing reel design in your carpet? Pretty neat!

This is a preliminary of some of my reels. The picture was taken when we first got the cabinet so not many of my GOOD reels are shown. This is an early ribbon cabinet.
