Ever seen anything like this?

Post by Jason »

I picked up this odd ball handle reel a couple years ago and was wondering if anyone has seen anything like this. Its made of nickel plated brass with steel screws, square crank hub, unusually large ball, and a curious crank knob. British? What do you think?

Wow!! Neat reel.

Jason: I don't have a clue about the maker but that's a neat ball-handle reel. I'd almost guess the reel was made first and the handle adapted later, but that's just a guess. I've never seen one like that. Hoping Steve Vernon and others weigh in on this. Gentlemen?

Sorry to take so long, Richard, but I thought your "Gentlemen?" disqualified me.

Jason,
Very neat, unusual reel: Ky-like rear bearing cover, flat headcap covering a flanged headplate (instead of a flanged headcap over a flat headplate), shouldered pillars with female threads, "homemade"-looking gear mountings.

That crank looks funny to me, too. I wonder if the owner had to have damaged gears replaced and maybe replaced the crank, as well. Here's a shot of a reel with a crank that probably came off a lathe or other tool. (Before I foolishly cleaned the reel, the crank was the same filthy dark brown as the rest of the reel.)

I have to admit, it took me two years to figure out how to get that headcap off. I was pulling and tugging at the wrong seam.
