I have a Shakespeare 1740 Tournament Freespool model HE reel that needs some help and I also need so information. I have not taken the reel apart yet. Are the posts and foot riveted to the back plate or do the posts unscrew? Somone has tried to polish the back plate and has rubbed the nickel silver finish off of the top half of the plate. Any chance someone would have a replacement? Also, I need to know about the end caps. The one on the front side has a groove in the middle of the edge all the way around but the reverse one doesn't. Is one of them incorrect or did they come like that?

Bill-I'm looking at three HE's right now, and only one of them has the grooved endcaps. I hadn't noticed that difference before, but because each of these is mint or nearly so, I suspect they came that way. My list shows the reel was manufactured from 4/23/40 until 7/31/42, so S. may have changed endcaps over that 27 month period. My pair of 1740 FK's both have the grooved endcaps, leading me to believe the grooved caps are the newer ones.
The posts appear to be riveted to the tail plate.
Sorry I don't have a replacement to offer you. They're great little reels, "built like a watch."
