I note the BCS came up with a way to avoid the embarrassment of Boise State beating Oklahoma (2 years ago) and Utah beating Alabama (last year) we're going to have the Buster Bowl. Two very good undefeated teams, TCU and Boise State will play each other in the Fiesta Bowl. I'd have loved to have seen TCU vs Cincinnati and BSU vs Penn State or Iowa, so we could see how these two teams stack up.

Playoffs, anyone?

Phil,

I definitely think the BCS chickened out. Utah's win last year scared them and the easy solution was to pit the two non-BCS together rather than risk the embarrassment of two non-BCS teams (potentially) routing BCS stalwarts. However, TCU and Boise did have a tremendous bowl game last year...

That being said, my Cincinnati Bearcats sure had an unbelievable run. They ended up one second and one foot away from playing for a national championship, having vaulted over TCU into 3rd in the BCS standings (which is why TCU didn't get to play Florida). For a team that was one of the worst Division 1 programs for upwards of thirty years, it is almost surreal to watch.

I'd love to see them go 13-0. May never happen again in my lifetime.

Todd, Cincinnati had a great season and deserves their bowl game. But I thnk you'll have to admit that Pitt gave them that game Saturday.

Will you have your coach next year?

Phil,

Absolutely...no way I thought they would come back down 21 points on the road, in the snow, at one of the least hospitable places on earth. I was watching with a bunch of UC alum friends and we simply could not believe they kept kicking off to Gilyard! Every time! It was surreal. The one guy who can beat you, and you keep kicking the ball to him. 400 yards of offense in one game.

When Pitt missed the extra point, I just knew UC would win, especially after Gilyard ran the kickoff back to the 50. A crushing loss for Pitt...

That being said, who'd have ever thought UC was one second away from playing for a national championship?

I've met Brian Kelly before and he's a gregarious guy but also a very adept politician. I've always felt he was waiting for the Michigan job to open (having coached at Grand Valley State and Central Michigan), but it would not surprise me if he takes the Notre Dame job. I'd like to see him stay but if he does go to ND he will win the national championship there. Note that Kelly's Bearcats have the highest academic rating among teams in the top 10 of the current BCS standings--something ND must love.

At least we get to play against 1986 Univ. of Cincinnati graduate Urban Meyer...

There is an excellent article about Urban Meyer in this week's Sports Illustrated.

I felt that Cin. was more than a second away from the national Championship. Nebraska gave that game away in the last minute or so. I guess good teams find ways to win.

The TCU coach thought he was only a second away from playing in the Championship game also.

Wish Brain Kelley had been coaching when I attended Central Michigan University. I do have a tie to him though. Herb Deromedie hired Brian at Central. Herb was the coach when I attended Central 1977-1981. He then became the Athletic Director.

When Herb was coach the student section had a chant "Turn the page Herb!" He was stuck on the run. Up the gut, up the gut, up the gut, Punt. I am not sure if there really was another page in the play book.

My Dad is a big Notre Dame fan. It would be nice to see them return to being a football force before Dad goes to see St. Peter.

You may be right Phil. Kick off out of bounds, 15-yard horse collar penalty...all of which led Texas to get one second on the clock.

As it turns out, however, the BCS chairman said that if Nebraska has won, Cincinnati would indeed have been playing for the National Championship. TCU would have been irate, I'm sure, but as I said, the goal is to keep the non-BCS guys out. They'll do whatever is possible to keep the TCUs and Boises from ever playing for (and possibly winning) a national championship.

The only sane solution is a playoff, but that's a long ways off.

Well, it's official. Brian Kelly to Notre Dame. Not like it's a big surprise.

Hey Phil, while you're fixing football, can you add a rule that stipulates you cannot interview for a vacant coaching position until AFTER the season is over?

Hey Todd, that coaching change wasn't much of a surprise was it. If I was fixing football, I'd sure try to keep coaches from interviewing while still playing. It will be hard on the Cincinnati players that Kelly brought in to his program. Maybe they'll transfer to Notre Dame.

No, I don't blame him and it's no shock. I just wonder how fair it is to work so hard for a 13-0 record, and then bail out before the bowl game (he won't be coaching). Would he have done this if they were playing for the National Championship?

The laugher? One of four names bantered around in town as a replacement is Peterson from Boise. No chance he leaves.
