j a coxe 25 assembly question

Post by leland99 »

I have a couple of coxe/bronson 25 model reels that when I re-assemble after cleaning, seem to slip or not fully engage when winding. These have a football shape at bottom of handle shaft with two elongated clutches with round tips on one end that seat into the main gear when wound forward, and disengage when wound backwards. Is there a trick or tip when reassembling this reel to ensure the clutches are correctly positioned to ensure it engages immediately, rather than slipping for 2-3 turns before engaging? Should these parts be oiled, greased or neither before reassembly? I can send photo if someone needs to see the items I am asking about. Thanks, Bryce Cypress, TX

As I recall, there are little counter-weights in that reel that just love to jump into the carpet when you aren't looking...did you get everything back in the reel and/or were all the parts there to begin?

Sounds to me Bryce like you are missing the tiny wire clip which causes just enough friction to ensure the mechanism expands when the crank is turned. It is also possible that the clips are sprung out slightly, which should be an easy fix. Email me if you need to see a picture of the part I'm talking about.

thanks john and bill. yes, I feel that I have all the parts including the two counter weights. I dont recall seeing any wire clips so perhaps that is something I am overlooking. Bill, I will send you a note to your email address.

Bryce: I just found a 25N and so had opportunity to clean it up yesterday. I had a similar issue where you had to pull out on the handle as you turned to get engagement of the spool...it turned out that I was just one cog shy of having the tailstock cap tightened enough to get the play out of the spool...in fact, it "popped" into position when I tightened a bit more and the problem went away...no play in the crank and the spool engages as soon as you start to crank...you might play around with yours in similar fashion, if you haven't solved the problem.

This is the part that wears out or is most often lost when cleaning. Without it the freespool mechanism works in a sporadic manner at best. Image
