bantam 100 fa on foot

i have a bantam 100 with a small problem when you cast and start to retrieve it reels rough unless you put pressure on the spool when slight pressure is applied it clicks and then is smooth as silk is this a problem with the pinion sort of reminds me of the way an ocean city saltwater reel engages however this is not normal for a bass reel
