Karla: That is a correct number (102) for the 300 yard reel. The box is from the 1930s.

No, I don't think so. The #102 has hard rubber side plates and oillite bearings. I used to have one but think it went to Gary Quick years ago. The reel that you show is not the right reel. Maybe someone can tell you more or has an Ocean City catalogue.

Harvey: that is the correct reel. I have OC catalogs from 1931, 1934, and 1936 in front of me right now. The first Ocean City reel, which is the one Karla pictures, is a #102 in the 300 yard size. The reel changed configuration to a Bakelite front plate with a small disk when they went to that "stick out" free spool lever. This is the version shown in the 1936 catalog. Karla's reel must be from the 1930-35 era.

Then I stand corrected! That is why we keep you around! Sorry Karla!
I knew that I had a #102 once with black end plates and the free spool lever wasn't like that.
Back in my hole I go!

Ocean City has several early models that were made in the classic GS/HR style similar to Karla's reel so be on the lookout, Harv. I don't know what numbers they were given but they only seem to be marked "Freespool - German Silver", "Surfcasting", etc. I really like those too  .

Now, at risk of starting another letter writing campaign, were these made from Montague's equipment in the "vom Hofe" style and did Ocean City really make any of vom Hofe's reels? (Ducking from the tubes of grease being thrown at me)

Brian,
Those Ocean City reels never did anything for me. That is why I shipped some thirty off to Gary years ago!
