really interesting reel on joes

Post by john elder »

Hey, guyz/gurlz: If you haven't seen it, go to the site below and look at the reel posted by JoeW...really interesting and presumably dates to mid 1880's...would be interested in hearing opinions from you folks in the know re the likelihood that this is what it appears to be and the value.

I thought it was a cool reel. If it turned out to be a fake, I think I'd still pay the $200.

Brian,
I think it could be labled as a folk art piece and how could it be a fake? It isn't marked as to who made it. Now, if it was marked "Meek", "Talbot" or even "Steve Vernon Special", I would have to aggree with you as it being a fake.
By the way, Those two Kids were no doubt "Keepers". Nice fish also.

Fake vs. Fabricated

Post by Brian F. »

Hi Harv,
I see your point about it not being labeled or marked. But I was reacting to John E's post on Joe's board about items that people make up with or without the intent to deceive others into thinking they are very old. He pointed out his encounters with others selling furniture and duck decoys being made to look old.

Or perhaps with other Folk Art items, like hooks and lures made and used by Native Americans and Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians), "Fake" might apply better. If it were made to deceive someone into thinking it was made by them or a long time ago when in fact it was not.

Maybe "Fake" is not accurate here with this or any other hand made reel? Is there another term that should be used, in this case?

I guess there's no problem if the seller doesn't say anything about it other than "How do you like this reel I have for sale?" and you judge it for yourself.

I still think it's a cool reel and find value in the effort someone put into it, whether it was "way back then" or yesterday.

Thanks for the kind words! The kids DID think about throwing Dad back, however.

Harvey, I'm not as old as you think. Besides, I always stamp the reels "Speshul," just to fool the counterfeiters.

While we're on the subject, Brian, "not-as-old-as-you-think" would be a good substitute for "fake."

And here, for your looking enjoyment, is a commercially made reel, probably British, that's a little like the one on Joe's board:

Steve,
I like your anthology on the meaning of fake. I never did
look at it in that light but you hit it on the head. I am sure
that the reel on Joes can’t be dated by the coin used since
the cent would be worth more than the reel at the time.
And is the “Stevphan V. Speshuly” reel I have of your making ?

Oh Yea Brian, I think John caught you! I saw them fish at
Target last weekend. They were strung up as Patio Lights!
