Winchester 4339

Post by Butch »

Hello,

I have a reel that I got from my Grandfather's collection after he died. I haven't been able to find out anything about it. I am not a collector and have no plans to sell it, but would like some information about it.

I tried to take the best picture of it I could, but my camera is not that good at close up shots.

It has Winchester Trademark USA 4339 stamped/engraved on the side. It is missing the crank screw that holds the crank handle. The crank knob has some wear. It is Level winding and the Click and Drag both seem to work fine(I found a site that listed the reel terms I should know to speak intelligently about it.;)). What do I need to do to the reel to make it shinier, keep it shiny, and make sure it continues to work?

I have read that Winchester made reels for about 10 years in the 20's but I was wondering if there was any way to tell what year or where it was sold or basically anything at all about it.

Thanks for any replies!

Butch: Your Winchester 4339 was only shown in the Winchester 1928, 1929 and 1930 catalogs. It was made in that three year period. It is made of nickel plated brass, so you need to be careful when polishing it. Personally, I wouldn't do anything other than to clean it and oil and lube it.
