TAP Computers for Kids

Post by Dale Noll »

Hi all,
Just a note to say Hello again to all you ORCAs. I am slowly trying to get back into working on reels again, at least part time. It has been about 3 yr since most of my last posts.

Some of you might be interested is what I have been about. Well, it is very simple, helping children. I volunteer with a group of folks who fix up donated computer, and give them to needly folks for free.

Over the last 3 1/2 yr, we had given away over 700 systems to homes with over 1100 children. Each system has newly installed software (XP Operating System) with a complete set of free programs to protect against virus and adaware. The addition of OpenOffice and Foxit Reader completes the Software. Also included are Speakers, Printers, and even a ream of paper. All the recepient needs to do is plug in and turn on.

The TAP stand for Technology Access Program. Our web site is www.tvcuc.org. You may wonder how an ORCA guy got interested in fixing old computers. Well, computers are just like reels. None are alike and many of the little screw drivers, flashlights, magnifiers, and tools work on computers.

My work is mostly Hardware related. When we get a donated Tower, I first open up and Blow out the dirt, dust, hair etc inside of the case. We have a special nozzel about 1/16" to get the compressed air in the right small places. (The Compressor has oil Oil Free bearings.)

The most critical area is the Heatsink over the Processor. This is where many of the computers we receive have plugged up vents, and overheating eventually shuts down the processor, or burns out the Motherboard.

What is the most difficult part? Just getting the case open is almost always
a challange. It reminds me of getting a reel open the first time.

What is the most rewarding part? Seeing a family receive a system and seeing a tear in the eye of even the most hardy person, and Volunteer.

If you have any questions, or want any more detailed stuff, just send an email or whatever. Hope you find this of some interest.

Great work, Dale! I've always thought of my computer as a huge mystery beyond the "on" button. :D
