David Lucas found some great old Shakespeare photos at the MSU museum.
This shot is Opie Davis, sales manager. Can anyone I.D. that crazy looking reel mounted to the wall by his desk?
David and his lovely wife Ann visited our home on Sunday and we spent some time looking at items in my collection and talking all things Shakespeare. It’s always fun to meet and talk with other serious collectors and lovers of tackle history!

That's funny! Also those two bakelite models sitting on the desk are confounding contraptions.

I still use an updated pushbutton model of those things.
It works just fine.
Love those Open Face Spinning Reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco)

The reel on the wall is almost on the window sill so it look like some sort of Penn .... sil reel. It sure looks sharpner than the ones on the desk. Both the one on the wall and the ones on the desk seem to have some sort of dial drags. The reels on the desk look to be electric reels for deep sea fishing because they have cords.

The thing on the wall is a harpoon sharpener. I have one in my collection in the garage.

There was a reel up on ebay recently that was inspired by, or made from, just such a pencil sharpener! I just looked for it and it may have gone by already.

Sorry to burst your collective bubbles, but the one on the wall is not a reel ...its a maggot grinder for making chum.

That is AWESOME! Must be French. Whether it’s guns, cars, or reels, French things are always awkward looking. They do well with food and wine, but mechanical things always look like after- thought designs. IMHO

As a reel… I don’t think I want to see it in operation.

Made in Kenosha, Wisconsin
It's a swiveling spinning reel without a line guide, a modernized Holding.

It actually works pretty well once you get the dang hang of it.
Lou made a decent quality product.

I’m sure his Camembert was good too. Just that the addition of the liver and fluffernutter never quite caught on.
In all seriousness… it is a unique design. But, functionally -coming at this as a lure angler- that’s as serious as I can get.

What is the vintage of that reel? Is it pre-monofilament? Or was it designed for braided line?
